Dr Poh Beow Kiong is a board-certified consultant urologist accredited with The Singapore Medical Council Registry of Specialists (Urology). He is a consultant urologist accredited with most of the private hospitals in Singapore.

Dr Poh graduated from the National University of Singapore and went on to start his surgical training in Singapore. After completing his surgical training, he was awarded The Masters in Medicine (Surgery) degree from the National University of Singapore. He was also accepted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Dr Poh subsequently went on to advance his training in Urology.

After graduating from The Advanced Specialist Training in Urology, Dr Poh travelled to North America to further his training in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS/Keyhole surgery) in urological cancers and urinary stones.

Dr Poh pursued his urology sub-speciality fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, where he trained under world-renowned endourologist Dr Ben Chew and MIS surgeon Professor Ryan Paterson in the fields of Advanced Endourology and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery.

During his fellowship training, Dr Poh also received training in Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS) surgery at the University of Southern California, USA, under the guidance of Professor Inderbir Gill.

Dr Poh specialises in advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endourology, including Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS). Dr Poh is one of the first urologists who helped refine the technique of laparoscopic retropubic radical prostatectomy (lap RRP) for prostate cancer in Singapore. Being one of the most experienced urologists in Singapore with this technique, Dr Poh’s efforts has resulted in lap RRP being developed into a highly efficient and oncologically safe procedure with post-operative complication rates comparable to those of major centres internationally.

During his fellowship stint in Canada, Dr Poh underwent specialised training in Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy (Nephron Sparing Surgery or NSS) and after his return to Singapore, he has sought to further refine the technique to make it safer and more efficacious. In Minimally Invasive (MIS) Nephron Sparing Surgery for kidney cancers, patients no longer need to sacrifice the entire kidney and at the same time are able to achieve good cancer control.

As a result of his efforts to refine this technique, he has been able to consistently achieve warm ischemia time of less than 20 minutes during his laparoscopic partial nephrectomies. This is achieved with good clinical and oncological outcomes with a short hospital stay. Patients who underwent this operation claimed excellent post-operation pain control and a short post-operation recovery period.

Dr Poh is also one of the few urologists in Singapore who is fellowship-trained to perform the technically challenging Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP). This advanced endourology technique is used to remove large prostates in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and has registered results that is as good as if not better than Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) in large prostatic glands. This excellent clinical result is coupled with a good post-operative recovery with a short post-operative hospital stay.

During his fellowship training, Dr Poh also received training in Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS) surgery at the University of Southern California, USA, under the guidance of Professor Inderbir Gill. LESS (Single Port Surgery) has a role in various urological MIS surgeries including LESS nephrectomy for kidney cancers and LESS adrenalectomy for adrenal tumors, in which the entire MIS surgery is performed through a small single umbilical port. This single port operation improves the cosmetic results of these operations.

Dr Poh was also part of the Prostate Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) panel of experts tasked by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to draft The Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines of Singapore, which was published in 2009.

In the field of teaching, Dr Poh has trained many urologists from Indonesia, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines. He was also involved in teaching urology residents of The University of British Columbia’s (Canada) Urologic Sciences Residency Programme. Dr Poh currently serves as a Clinical Teacher and Examiner of the Yong Loo Lin Medical Faculty, National University of Singapore. Dr Poh is also active in the training of young urologists in the field of laparoscopic urologic cancer surgeries as well as minimally invasive urinary stone surgeries.
