Dr. Peter Yan is currently a Consultant Cardiologist and Physician in private practice at Gleneagles and Mt. Elizabeth Hospitals. He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in 1976. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and obtained his Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1981. He then went on to complete his Fellowship in Cardiology at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, where he sub-specialised in the field of coronary intervention in 1986

Dr. Peter Yan is currently a Consultant Cardiologist and Physician in private practice at Gleneagles and Mt. Elizabeth Hospitals. Dr. Yan was an Associate Professor in Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University of Singapore and a Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Cardiac Department of the National University Hospital, Singapore. He is a member of the American Heart Association (Clinical Cardiology, Cardiopulmonary Critical Care and Epidemiology). Dr. Yan sits on numerous International Advisory Boards on lipids, hypertension, anti-platelet and anti-coagulation therapy, coronary interventional devices and innovations. He was formerly the Medical Director of Parkway Heart and Vascular Centre and is currently a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Gleneagles Hospital and the Chair of the Gleneagles Cardiology Specialist Interest Group.

Dr. Yan was awarded the Singapore Government Fellowship scholarship for Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1981 and the China Medical Board Fellowship for Cardiology training in Melbourne, Australia.

He has held numerous positions in the past, including President of the Singapore Cardiac Society (1993-1994), Vice-Chairman, Singapore National Heart Association (1992-1993), Chairman of the National Heart Week (1988 and 1993), Member of the National Committee on Cardiac Care (2000-2002), member of the working group for National Guidelines and Consensus Statement in Acute Coronary Syndrome, Coronary Intervention and Coronary CT angiogram, Deputy-Chairman of the 13th ASEAN Congress of Cardiology 2000 and Deputy Chairman, Organising Committee of the 14th Asia-Pacific Congress of Cardiology in 2004.

Dr. Yan was the first to introduce Coronary Angioplasty (in 1986) and the Coronary Stent Program (1987) to the National University Hospital, Cardiac Department. He was one of the pioneering members of the First Singapore Mass CPR Training.

Dr. Yan has published and presented numerous papers in renown international and local journals. He has been invited to lecture extensively internationally and in the Asia-Pacific region. He had previously been a member of the Editorial Board of the ASEAN Heart Journal, the Singapore Medical Journal and was co-editor of the publication, “Coronary Artery Disease: The Singapore Perspective” and Editor-in-Chief of the Course Book for the 11th Live Demonstration Course in Cardiovascular Intervention, 2002.

Dr. Yan’s current research interests include, the evaluation of new drug-eluting stents, new device treatment of high blood pressure, lipid intervention and assessment of the vulnerability of the atheromatous plaques. He also has a special interest in lifestyle modifications and interventions, and the development and implementation of “precision medicine” focusing on personalised cardiovascular medicine (genomic-driven cardiovascular therapies).

(I) PAST RESEARCH INTERESTS

  1. Study of the parameters for assessment of myocardial reperfusion following thrombolytic therapy using continuous ST monitoring and rapid cardiac enzymes assessment.
  1. Percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass supported coronary angioplasty – A pilot study on the use of percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass system in supported coronary angioplasty at the National University Hospital.

    Project I:
    The use of percutaneous CPS in supported coronary angioplasty for patients with cardiogenic shock in acute myocardial infarction.

    Project II:
    The use of percutaneous CPS in high risk patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.

  1. Study on excimer laser coronary angioplasty (ELCA) at the National University Hospital.
  1. Studies on the clinical applications of intraluminal real-time ultrasonic imaging on the peripheral and coronary artery systems in health and disease.
  1. Coronary stenting at the National University Hospital

    A study to look at the results on primary success and restenosis rates of coronary arterial stenting/angioplasty versus balloon angioplasty.  (Project under collaboration with Dr Richard Schatz from USA).

  1. Potential use of I/V esmolol (ultrashort acting beta-blocker) in coronary artery disease (unstable angina/acute myocardial infarction) and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias.

(II) CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

  1. Advancement in the field of coronary intervention (e.g. new stent technology – i.e. bioabsorbable scaffolding, dissolvable metabolic stents, specialised stents for complex coronary intervention, etc).
  1. Treatment and management of acute myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes – drugs, coronary intervention, protection devices, etc.
  1. Mechanism for atherosclerosis of plaque prevention/progression/regression/stabilisation.
  1. Statins and non-statin therapies for hyperlipidemia (including PCSK9 and newer anti-lipid therapies).
  1. Lifestyle enhancement and modification programs in the primary prevention of coronary artery disease, lipid and hypertension management in particular with a view of total and global intervention of atherosclerosis.
  1. Role of angiogenesis, stem cell transplantation and gene therapy in cardiovascular disease.
  1. Advance in treatment of heart failure, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and obesity
  1. Developing multispecialty interventional vascular therapy programs involving coronary, carotid, peripheral and renal vascular systems.

  1. Role of intravenous nifedipine in acute myocardial infarction – limitation of infarcts size and in unstable angina.
  1. The use of cliazapril (ACE inhibitor) in the control of hypertension in the various ethnic population in Singapore. (Study funded by Roche).
  1. The role of Trimetazidine (vasteral) in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) – To study the anti-ischaemic properties of Trimetazidine before and after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.
  1. Study of the predictors of restenosis following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty using clinical features, cardiac enzymes, 12-lead ECG, 24-hour Holter monitoring and continuous 12-lead ST-segment monitoring and comparing these parameters to coronary angiography performed 24 hours after the angioplasty.
  1. A study on cicletanine (prostacyclin stimulator) on hypertension and atheroma regression.
  1. The use of facsimile machine in CCU, cardiothoracic ICU and Emergency Department in the management of acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmias.
  1. Study of the correlation between lipoproteins and patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty to look for predictors of restenosis.
  1. Comparison of cardiac catheterisation, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of coronary artery bypass grafts.
  1. A multicentre study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of Tirofiban in patients undergoing intracoronary stent placement (MSD).
  1. Validation of Central Aortic Systolic Pressure (CASP) derived from radial artery wave forms by comparison with direct measure of Aortic root pressure at cardiac catheterization (Healthstats).
